1. Yay! It's my birthday

Yes, it was April 1, my birthday. Every year the whole world celebrates my birthday and many people make fool of others and become themselves fools too!

To my surprise, nobody at home wished me on that day, not even my loving sister Neha. The day was spent in complete suspense. I was wondering whether my family members are making fool of me or whether they have completely forgotten my birthday or whether there was some other reason.

It was already late in the evening and I just returned from the party arranged by my friends for me; I still saw no signs of anyone wishing me. I was quite puzzled to see my family members who did not even care to ask me from where did I return.

"Chalo, koi baat nahi" I said to myself and went into my room to continue my usual routine of playing with my dearest dog "smiley". Yes it's smiley; I have named it so. Smiley always brings smiles on my face at times when I forget to smile.

It was dinner time and mom called me for dinner. I replied in a low voice saying that I have already had enough with my friends outside. Hearing that my mom came to my room and asked me to stay awake until she is back from the kitchen work after everyone's dinner is over.

I was still confused, amazed, and puzzled about everyone's behavior at home. I did not know whether it was a good sign or a bad one. Moments just flew and mom returned with tears in her eyes. (I hate to see those). Seeing that, in a hurry I hugged her and asked what was the matter.

She was staring at me with tears still in her eyes. After a small pause she started ...

"Look son, today is your birthday. You have now turned 24! This is the first year after your birth when I have missed wishing you (she has now wished unknowingly). This was a deliberate act of us and it was your father's command to all of us. He asked us not to wish you and not to celebrate your birthday until you grow to the expectations that the society (I don't know who's name is this) has on you!", and she left the room.

Listening to this I was stunned, I was sad. The happiness, surprise and suspense came to an end with my mom's words. I understood the intent behind her hard words and I just went to bed without uttering a single word.

My birthday ended up with "Shit, why did I get another year old!" instead of "Yay! It was my birthday".
